I [heart] my gadgets
iPhones, PSP’s Wii’s, Xbox’s and more gadgets like these are just a few of the latest pieces of technology that Capetonians love to have. New shops spring up everyday [mostly at the waterfront] beckoning you in and basically forcing you to choke the last vestiges of life from your credit card. I love gadgets myself. I LOVE them. My girlfriend does as well but she does not share the extreme level of technology obsession that I possess. In my lifetime I have owned countless TV’s, computers, videogame consoles, mobile phones and other sundry electronics, all in a bleak attempt to ‘one-up’ my friends and be declared the overall and supreme ruler of gadgetry!
However it is not just I who lusts after shiny toys of metal and circuitry. Cape Town, unlike the other provinces is aesthetically concerned with their gadgets so only the very sleekest will do. Like the new iPhone 3G which is only available near then end of September plus you need to be on a waiting list as well. Apple has updated, upgraded and partially redesigned their [unlaunched in South Africa] iPhone after much demand was made to improve on their previous models shortcomings. I plan to get one myself, providing that the asking price is R100. Next on our lists is surely a new games console. Never mind the PS3, as it’s too expensive and the games don’t seem to appeal to anybody with half a brain. Stick with the Xbox 360 and your nights will be filled with hours of online pleasure. I’m still talking about gaming. The most important part of a next-generation console is the input device and the Xbox 360’s controller is the best game-pad ever made, barring none. The less said about the Nintendo Wii the better. This is strictly for kids only.
Consider a massive HD [high-defination] TV to round out the package. Standard, blurry definition displays are very last century. What you really want is plasma TV with an insane resolution massaging your eye sockets. The price has dropped very sharply since their initial inception into our technology-hungry society. They are very affordable [below R5000 on some models] and will make any DVD or games you play seem like its playing on your own private movie theatre. Personally, there has been a new laptop catching my eye. The Asus EEEPC. A sub R3000 miniature marvel that runs both Windows, Linux and is designed for portability. It even comes in a sweet sky-blue colour, which happens to be my favourite.
So what are you waiting for? A Cape Town tour showing you where the best gadget stores are? The gadgets are calling to be plucked off the shelves and held lovingly in our hands. When in doubt, always choose the shiniest as it will make your friends the most jealous.
