Home Improvements: Brighten up your Entryway

If you’re considering doing a few home improvements, think about what you see when you first enter your home. Does it brighten your day whenever you walk in your front door? The entrance to your house should welcome guests, and make you feel comforted and delighted when you get home. Re-styling your entryway is a great start to simple home improvements. Here’s how to start:

  1. De-clutter
    • Organizing is the first and most important step. Clear out any excess stuff you have lying around, and set up baskets and/or wall hooks to help you put keys, bags, mail, even coats in order. Having a clear, organized entryway will help you catch your breath when you’re in a hurry.
  2. Decorate : Details and  Doormats
    • Use accent pieces or art to make your entryway uniquely yours – if you don’t have a lot of space, even a few framed photographs or small paintings can add personality to a small space.
    • If you have a little more room, using wallpaper to highlight your entryway can be fun and experimental – but don’t go overboard. Depending on the space that you’re working with, wallpaper can be particularly tricky — too much color or pattern in one area can be overwhelming.
    • Try strategically placing plants in the entryway if you have a small desk or a shoe rack – they brighten up a room and bring a little life into it.
  3. Add someplace to sit down: Extra home improvement points if you add storage space
    • Again, just if you have the space, try adding a bench, desk, or even a stool. This will let you to store organization baskets underneath it, sort mail on top of it, or just sit down to take off your shoes.
    • Another great idea is to set up a charging station for your mobile devices. Having a plug-in place right by your front door will remind you to charge your cell phone, iPod, iPad etc. right as you walk through the door.

Of course, there are all kinds of other directions that you can take, especially since home improvements all depend on the kind of space that you’re working with. The key aspect of your entryway should be that it welcomes you in, and makes a statement about your home.
