A newcomers perspective
Someone pinch me… I still cannot get over the fact that I am now a Capetonian. It all happened so fast. Let me back track and start from the top. Two months ago my life read like this:
“Girl, 24 years old, single, living in a granny-flat …with her parents, broke, stuck- in- a -rut at her job as a newspaper hound, seeks change and adventure.â€
That sad little classified ad became the apex of my identity for a while until…my “aha†moment came. Which is: if you want it (change) then get it. So I applied for a position as a copywriter with a online business company in Cape Town, this despite having no previous experience in the particular field. When I got the call to come down all the way from Newcastle to Cape Town for an interview, I booked my ticket and went with the wind. The interview barely lasted 10minutes and I went back home unsure whether it went well or not. A week later I was called in for a final interview and a few hours later after the interview, I got a call to say I had received the job.
Today’s my second day on the job and I’m thrilled. Not one for clichés, I must confess that I find my colleagues to be really nice and friendly people. Perhaps it’s a Cape Town thing, because everywhere I go, I’m greeted with genuine smiles. I’m still trying to get used to it.
My little classified ad has shortened dramatically and reads “Girl, 25…next week, single, seeking a flat and adventure.â€
My focus at the moment, apart from doing well at work, is to live the adventurous life I’ve always craved. That includes hiking up a mountain…Table Mountain, to try surfing and to finally get my divers license and swim with the whales.
This coming weekend the adventure begins because a friend will be taking me on a fully guided tour of Cape Town and I just cannot wait to discover Cape Town, my city.
